Sclerotherapy
is a procedure for the treatment of unwanted spider veins, the small
superficial blood vessels that become enlarged and appear red or blue.
The legs are the most commonly treated area. A chemical solution is
injected into veins to cause them to collapse and form scar tissue.
The scar tissue permanently closes the veins while nearby veins take
up re-routed blood flow.
Sclerotherapy
requires multiple treatments to close off all affected veins. Additional
treatments may be needed from time to time as new enlarged veins appear.
Some possible side effects of sclerotherapy may include slight swelling,
bruising, stinging or pain, muscle cramps, redness and itching at injection
sites.
